Alcestis
is
a progressive and cost-effective service that helps medical examiner and coroner
offices manage their case information over the Internet.
Alcestis
also offers a nationwide, comprehensive, and uniform database to researchers
interested in public health and injury prevention. Alcestis has the potential to be a vital
source of mortality data from across the U.S. Its database is a unique source of
fatal injury and non-natural death information; a useful tool to assess the
health status of a county, region or state; and has the potential to focus
prevention initiatives.
In
Greek Mythology, "Alcestis"
was the wife of a mortal who was condemned to die. Fates struck a deal to
allow Alcestis to give her life so that her husband might live. In the same spirit, the
Alcestis service offers a way that those who die may contribute to scientific
understanding so that others may learn and avoid preventable deaths.
